Microdermabrasion Gets Rid of “Maskne”
While face masks help keep us safe during the pandemic, constantly wearing face masks can have the unfortunate side effect of causing ugly acne outbreaks. For people with acne-prone skin, face masks can aggravate the eruption of pimples. But even others who have never had acne before are now experiencing break-outs due to face mask usage.
In fact, facemask induced acne is so prevalent among adults its own name has even emerged: “maskne”!
Fortunately, Advanced Laser Spa in Sterling Heights provides a variety of skin care treatments and products that may help soothe and medicate the skin, decrease inflammation, and eliminate unsightly, adult acne. Microdermabrasion is one of our most popular treatments for acne caused by face masks.
How Face Masks Cause Acne Breakouts
Constant rubbing and pressure from wearing a face mask can trap dirt, debris, oil (sebum), dead skin cells, and even pathogens in the pores from repeated breathing. As a result, germs begin to develop within the pores, producing inflammation and the appearance of pimples, blackheads, and enlarged pores.
This is typically more noticeable on the bridge of the nose and cheekbones, where the facemask scrapes and pushes against the skin.
Additionally, during times of stress (such as the COVID-19 epidemic), the body produces more of the stress hormone “cortisol” – which accelerates the creation of pore-clogging oil (sebum).
Face Mask Acne Microdermabrasion Treatment
The microdermabrasion facial is a very effective skin care treatment for acne that we provide at our MedSpa. Dermabrasion is a non-invasive – yet extremely effective – exfoliating procedure that unclogs pores AND eliminates dead skin cells that might lead to future breakouts. After their first facial, patients report having a smoother, brighter, and more even complexion.
If you have acne, avoid drug store “kits” or over-the-counter treatments used at home. Everyone would have beautiful skin if drugstore products worked. You’ve probably previously experimented with a variety of drugstore and internet acne products with unsatisfactory results. This is because non-professional acne products and procedures are weaker and more superficial than medical-grade microdermabrasion treatments.
Microdermabrasion for Treatment of “Maskne”
Microdermabrasion is the optimal skin care procedure for unclogging pores, soothing inflamed and irritated skin, and eliminating ugly acne outbreaks! Microdermabrasion is a three-in-one treatment that cleanses and resurfaces the skin, leaving it smooth, radiant, and blemish-free.
Microdermabrasion begins by exfoliating the skin’s surface layer (epidermis), removing dead skin cells, dirt, and debris. Following that, sebum, dead cells, germs, and other “gunk” blocking the pores are vacuum suctioned out.
Finally, customized medical grade formulations that soothe inflammation, decrease visible redness, and destroy acne-causing bacteria are administered. Salicylic acid is a common ingredient in microdermabrasion serums because it has the capacity to enter pores and clean them out by dissolving the intercellular substance that binds skin cells together.
In addition to thorough cleansing of pores, salicylic acid reduces sebum (oil) excretion, which helps prevent future acne outbreaks.
Apart from unclogging clogged pores and preventing future acne outbreaks, microdermabrasion facials can also be used to erase or minimize acne scars, pockmarks, and skin texture unevenness produced by prior acne breakouts.
