In this article, the skin rejuvenation experts at Advanced Laser & Skin Care answer our patient’s most frequently asked questions about Matrix Skin Resurfacing.
What does Matrix Skin Resurfacing treat?
Matrix Skin Resurfacing can be used to treat a variety of skin problems including fine lines and moderate wrinkles, loose skin texture, acne scars, and pigmentation issues such as age spots. Patients will see an overall improvement in the appearance, texture and tightness of their skin.
How does Matrix Skin Resurfacing work?
Matrix uses a state-of-the-art technology called “sublative rejuvenation” that uses radiofrequency waves to correct a variety of skin issues.
During sublative rejuvenation bi-polar radiofrequency energy penetrates the deeper layers of skin in a “matrix” (grid pattern) via 64 electrodes on the applicator. The targeted, damaged skin cells are destroyed while the surrounding skin is left unharmed.
The radiofrequency “damage” to the skin activates the body’s natural healing mechanisms. This stimulates production of collagen fibers with smooth, strengthen and tighten skin.
Sublative rejuvenation is different than many other treatments, including most laser procedures, because the radiofrequency allows for deeper penetration of the skin that is not just superficial. This enables new collagen production on a deeper, structural level.
What is the recovery like for Matrix Skin Resurfacing?
There is little to no downtime after Matrix Skin Resurfacing. Most patients return to work or their regular daily activities immediately following treatment.
The first day or two after undergoing Matrix, patients may experience mild redness and minor swelling, followed by some dryness or flaking of the older layers of your skin, which can easily be treated with a mild moisturizer.
What are the advantages of Matrix Skin Resurfacing?
Matrix skin resurfacing is considered a “natural” treatment for wrinkles, aging, roughness and pigmentation because it stimulates the body’s own natural collagen growth from the inside – so there are no known side effects or serious risks.
And because the skin is left intact – unlike ablative laser treatments that remove the entire top layer of skin – it’s also much less invasive so it is less painful and the recovery time is much quicker.
How many Matrix Skin Resurfacing treatments do I need?
Each Matrix patient’s treatment protocol will vary depending upon their skin issues, skin type, and the individual results desired. Typically patients will receive optimal benefits from three treatments, each spaced four to six weeks apart.
When will I see results from Matrix Skin Resurfacing?
Patients will begin to see results after the very first treatment. Results will continue to improve as the body produces collagen over time, for up to one year post treatment.
And, because Matrix Skin Resurfacing works by rebuilding the body’s collagen, there are no limitations on how long the results can last. A single maintenance treatment a year after your sessions can help maintain and enhance results.
Does Matrix Skin Resurfacing hurt?
Unlike aggressive fractional laser treatments, Matrix Skin Resurfacing is very tolerable. Most patients feel a warm, prickly sensation, followed by a pink or red “sunburn” feeling.
Topical numbing cream (anesthetic ointments) can be applied to ensure a comfortable treatment.
Is Matrix Skin Resurfacing safe for all skin types?
Matrix Skin Resurfacing is one of the only fractional skin resurfacing treatments that can be used on all skin types, tones and colors – including darker skin. Patients with skin conditions such as eczema, however, are not good candidates for Matrix RF skin resurfacing.
